Do you own a small business? If so, you should make sure you are prepared for potential cyber-attacks in 2020. Over 40% of cyber-attacks are aimed at small business, and an attack could slow or halt your business completely.

Here are four cybersecurity tips for businesses in 2020.

Hire Security Help (Or Develop The Skills Yourself)

Most small business owners know that cybersecurity is important, but they don’t know the best ways to protect themselves from attacks. If this is the case for you, consider hiring cybersecurity assistance to check that your business is fully protected from potential attacks – or take a course so that you can make the checks yourself.

This is a great way to look after your business, as it means that you can frequently check and update your website to make sure it is secure (rather than having to pay someone else to look at the website every year or so).

And this doesn’t have to affect the day to day running of your business; it is possible to get a cybersecurity analysis certificate by taking an online course in your spare time. So you can keep working while you study!

Anti-Virus

Always have your systems protected by antivirus software.  Thankfully, a low-footprint software exists for Linux. In order to better understand antivirus programs, it may be beneficial to first understand the malware itself. Find the best protection by researching product terms like Windows Defender vs Avast.  Or consider using Kaspersky antivirus that is designed to protect users from malware and is primarily designed for computers running Microsoft Windows and macOS and a version for Linux is also available for business consumers.

Back-Up Regularly

It is also very important to back up your data regularly. 60% of small business that suffers a data loss shut down within six months, which is very scary – but entirely preventable if you back up your data every few days or so. So back up as frequently as possible, and use multiple systems; for instance, save a copy to a USB stick, and then save a second copy to the cloud. This gives you a second layer of protection, so you can rest easy at night.

It can also be useful to hire an IT security team to check that your system is fully secure, especially if you handle sensitive information (such as home addresses and phone numbers).

Ensure Software is Always Up To Date

Outdated software tends to be much easier to hack into, so ensure that your software is up to date every few weeks. This will reduce the chance of someone gaining unauthorized access, and it doesn’t take much time or effort; just make sure that you do system updates every time you get a notification (or set devices to automatically update so you have to do even less!).

Use A VPN

Do you have remote workers who sometimes use public Wi-Fi? If so, consider using a VPN to reduce security risks. Sniffing tools are very popular with hackers, and if you log on to a public network with a work laptop or computer, you could be vulnerable to a sniffing tool.

Thankfully, a VPN will reduce this risk as it connects you to the internet anonymously, so it is nearly impossible for a hacker to track you. VPNs are very popular for this reason; in fact, one out of four people use a VPN when they are online, which is a good indicator of how useful they can be!
