Information Technology Blog - - The Best Code Editors for Linux - Information Technology Blog
In our opinion there is no better place to code than on Linux. It’s just built for it. However, just like Windows and Macs, you need the right tool for the job.
Thankfully, on Linux there are a many code editors for you to choose from. That’s the best part about Linux. The open source community gives you many amazing options and you can choose the one that works best for you.
Below we have highlighted some of our favorite code editors for Linux. All of these options are completely free and open source and are just waiting for you to download and use them on your Linux box.
Brackets
Brackets is an open source editor from Adobe created with web developers in mind. It includes built-in support for HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and includes handy auto-complete features to help you code as quickly as possible. It’s cross platform, features full plugin support, has PreProcessor support, and even includes inline editing and live previews so you can see the results of your hard work.

Visual Studio Code
While Visual Studio Code may be from Microsoft, don’t worry, it’s completely open source. It’s also a great editor, especially if you are doing web development. The editor itself is very lightweight and comes with a wide range of features including auto-complete features, built-in Git support, and it fully supports extensions so you can add to its power whenever you need it. It’s also cross platform, so if you use both Windows and Linux you can have one editor ready to code no matter what machine you are using.

Kate
Kate is another little known editor available for Linux, Windows and Mac. It supports over 250 languages with highlight and bracket matching and even on the fly spell checking so you don’t get saddled with those silly mistakes. While it may not look quite as sleek as the other options, it’s window splitting mode will come in very handy on complicated projects and like the others on this list comes with full plugin support. While this one may not be as popular as some of the others, Kate brings all the tools you need to create amazing projects in a wide range of languages.

jEdit
Another editor that isn’t very well known and certainly won’t win any beauty contests, jEdit is still worth a second look, in our opinion. The fact is it’s one of the most powerful options out there, featuring support for more than 200 languages, auto indent, word wrap, and more. Dubbed the programmer’s text editor, it’s not surprising that you will find many different plugins to further enhance an already powerful editor. One of the coolest plugins we’ve seen is the FTP plugin that allows you to edit files over an sFTP connection, a great option for those that need to edit files remotely.

Atom IDE
Atom was actually developed and created by Github, so you can imagine the power that it comes with right after install. With support for hundreds of languages, including HTML, CSS, Python, C, C++, and more, you can pretty much use Atom for every scripting and programming project you have on your plate. It also comes with full GitHub support right out of the box, as you can probably imagine.

Bluefish
Bluefish has been around for a bit now and for awhile was one of the goto editors for Mac OS X users. Today, it’s a cross platform text editor that is perfect for users who must switch between platforms from time to time. It supports many different languages such as CSS, HTML, Python, ASP, Java, JavaScript, and more. It supports auto-completion, automatic indentation, and much more. It’s lightweight and easy to use and another great option for our cross platform readers.

Final Thoughts
If you love to code, or are thinking about learning to code, there is no platform better than Linux. But you still need the right tools. These code editors will make it easy for you to learn how to code so you can start creating amazing coding projects today. All you have to do is fire up your Linux laptop and install one of these great options and you will be programming before you know it.
