Below we have highlighted some of our favorite code editors for Linux. All of these options are completely free and open source and are just waiting for you to download and use them on your Linux box.

Brackets

Brackets is an open source editor from Adobe created with web developers in mind. It includes built-in support for HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and includes handy auto-complete features to help you code as quickly as possible. Another editor that isn’t very well known and certainly won’t win any beauty contests, jEdit is still worth a second look, in our opinion. The fact is it’s one of the most powerful options out there, featuring support for more than 200 languages, auto indent, word wrap, and more. Dubbed the programmer’s text editor, it’s not surprising that you will find many different plugins to further enhance an already powerful editor. One of the coolest plugins we’ve seen is the FTP plugin that allows you to edit files over an sFTP connection, a great option for those that need to edit files remotely.

Atom was actually developed and created by Github, so you can imagine the power that it comes with right after install. Bluefish has been around for a bit now and for awhile was one of the goto editors for Mac OS X users. Today, it’s a cross platform text editor that is perfect for users who must switch between platforms from time to time. It’s lightweight and easy to use and another great option for our cross platform readers.
